Saw the Russian dialogue film but no need to understand the language to follow the film … a gem !!

    This movie needed a story.

I didn’t mind it, despite the critics reviews. Watch it and judge for yourself.

First part is a good adaptation to the book, and is OK. But second part changes things and does not explain the main core of the book and its conclussions. From Aura Garrido, an excellent actress, they could have obtained more, but she still surprises me in any register.

This movie was right up my street. Horde survival movie with a few touching moments, and a few sick ones (inter species sex – not on screen thankfully). Effects are ok but the story is brilliant if you are a fan of survival horror (zombies…etc). Very good imagery with 90% of the film centered around a lighthouse. Was not expecting much and was very pleasantly surprised.

A pure classic and reversed version of pocahontas with a thriller twist. I absolutely couldnt resist falling in love with this movie. I would deffinitely recommend tbis movie to those who like sci-fi/thriller/fiction.

its a interesting film and very well filmed, but it is let down by the story somewhat with a little tweaking this film would have been top class, but still very watchable

  • AnonymousMarch 3, 2018Reply

I loved this movie. It was unlike any thriller I’ve ever seen and was a very dark spin on The Tempest with a monster-y edge. I couldn’t look away.

Boring like hell. Shape of Water lookalike? An illustration of how the Mayans or the Chinese were invaded by Spanish or British ammunition.

A true gem! My favourite at Frightfest. It gives THE SHAPE OF WATER a run for its money.

A strange yet enjoyable film which roughly consists of two men on an Island fighting for their lives, but why are they fighting? The ending leaves some unanswered questions which leaves the watcher wondering, and trying to piece together some answers, but it’s a great film with no dull moments

Interesting film, 2 men and a mermaid type woman on a deserted island, defending a mad max type looking lighthouse from what? Seems at one point to leaning toward an odd love story but no worries. Not a dull film, I like the sound of the waves too.

seeing this movie was really good I think they could have done more with the story.

  • Riff JSeptember 9, 2018Reply

Its an ok movie… nothing more and nothing less. It dragged on at times but what made the film exciting were the battle/fight scenes. The story is somewhat plain without much of a backstory hence theres no emotional investment in the proceedings.

4/5. Cold Skin has a few minor problems, but it’s an exciting and engaging film that is like a violent and scary version of The Shape of Water.

I’m not really sure what this movie was trying to say. There’s a good enough plot idea in there but it tries to play too clever with its message and so just becomes rather unsatisfying. Set in 1914, it follows the story of a young man sent to an isolated lighthouse somewhere in the far northern ocean. There he meets the bedraggled lighthouse keeper and soon finds himself under siege from a race of murderous amphibious creatures that attack the lighthouse each evening. So, a creature-feature horror movie with a few edge of the seat moments. However, it also turns out that the lighthouse keeper has one of the creatures captive and is using her as a companion in every sense of the word. He is running the island as a kind of private kingdom and refuses to return to civilisation. So we get a sprinkling of Apocalypse Now as the deranged Kurtz-like figure holds the young man and the fish woman in his thrall. We then get a bit of a commentary of the evils of colonialist imperialism and we finally get a bit of role reversal which is left kind of unresolved. This shopping list of genres makes the whole plot seem untidy and crowded and, despite some nice location shots, there is a wee bit too much footage of angry, leaden skies and stormy waves crashing on the shore. It all become a little tedious to be honest and had it followed one thread more completely, it could have been so much better.

a visually stunning tale with plenty of terrifying action which limps to a moral conclusion….worth watching if only for the visuals

  • Nilufer EOctober 12, 2018Reply

I enjoyed the flick, the atmosphere, the beasts and even the cast. The suspense was intense in the beginning and got quite creepy and artistic in a way. I’m impressed.

Amazing film!!!! Need number two NOW

there seems to be a vogue for dark eerie films set in remote settings with with short days and long nights and some inevitable harsh wintery conditions. the monsters were a cross between the creature from ‘the shape of water’ and gollum from lord of the rings. i guess this film showed the unsurprising result of isolation and loneliness in an inhospitable place and questioned who the monsters really were. it was acceptable but rather drawn out and a poor mans ‘the terror’,

  • Mark JOctober 21, 2018Reply

Despite the negative critical review, I actually found this to be remarkably good. The cinematography is beautiful and atmosphere in places is intense. There are lulls here and there in pace but as an overall movie, it’s defimitely not rotten in my opinion.

Movie has a wonderful plot to start with. And it keeps in on your toes the whole time. But the ending is little bit abrupt. Definitely a watch and make your own ending according to how you see the ending.

It’s good. Worth a watch. Jeez, film critics are the worst among humans. There are some useless films out there but this is not one of them.

Cold Skin (4 out of 5 stars). Cold Skin is a sci fi horror film that delivers with suspense and chills about a meteorologists and another guy that are stuck on an island with a lighthouse. And every night these humanoid sea creatures comes out to attack them. Lots of action, a great concept, and a fast paced direction. In 1914, a meteorologist Friend (David Oakes) travels to an island to replace the previous researcher. Except, he is nowhere to be found. He does meet the remote island’s lighthouse guard played by Ray Stevenson. And he notices the lighthouse is built like a fortress like it is prepared for a battle of some kind. When night hits, Friend notices an army of humanoid sea creatures comes out of the ocean to attack him and the lighthouse. After a few attacks, he teams up with the light house guard and to hold defense against these sea creatures. He notices that the guy has one of the sea creatures befriended like a pet. How long can they hold out surviving the attacks before they both lose their minds towards each other? The plot was good. Friend and Gruner (Ray Stevenson) despise each other. But they both need each other for survival. Why is Gruner obsessed with staying on the island when a ship comes to switch the meteorologists? What really happened to the other meteorologists? These questions gets answered and it is best to see and find out in the end. There is a lot of suspenseful action that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. It is Friend’s journey of being stuck on the island with a guy that is a maniac. And creatures that he has to be alert for. There can be some rough scenes to watch with Gruner abusing one of the female sea creatures. While Friend is falling for the creature. David Oakes and Ray Stevenson were both great playing their characters. Overall, Cold Skin is a good film. It is action packed. It tries for some suspenseful scares. The acting is great. And it never slows down.

Spanish, bad imitation of the equally ugly “The Shape of Water”. If by now he didn’t waste time too often in Hollywood, I’d have been intrigued to see it directed by Herzog.

I watched with little hope, thinking that it was another rate B type movie, that I was mistakenly passed by my friends the image quality and the light convinced me firstly that I was wrong , and then the dialogues and the history, unraveling it self made be sure that it would be a great movie…
Have his flaws but ergo, the movie is very good , with a very good history, acting and…the end
There is something that is missing I can’t explaint it …but it there is something missing that would make this filme so memorable

  • Pitariu DFebruary 1, 2019Reply

It is one of the best movies I have seen lately. Even if there are some slip ups it still makes for a great movie.

  • AnonymousMarch 4, 2019Reply

long winded but good practical effects & commentary on colonialism.

  • Late RApril 10, 2019Reply

At its core, I get what the film is trying to say and it really is admirable, but it’s a bit too obvious, too quickly and lacks subtlety; so much so that it hardly comes as a surprise when the “big revelation” is made. More importantly, however, is that it focuses too much time on the build up to the aforementioned revelation, as well as the more action-y parts, that it forgets to delve deeper and explore the creatures and characters, which could have been fascinating. Because, without a doubt, the most engaging scenes are those where the humans are either interacting with each other or with the creatures (in a way that doesn’t involve butchering them).

That being said, the premise is great and there are still a few captivating scenes that hint at what it could have been; the acting’s on-point from all involved (Stevenson’s superb, and Aura Garrido does an impressive job of conveying emotion from under layers of prosthetics and makeup); and the location is brilliantly chosen, really adding to that dark feel.

It’s unfortunate that the ending is so frustrating and that it couldn’t find a way to focus on the more interesting aspects of the story that could have elicited more emotional engagement. Yes, its reach exceeds its grasp, but I’d argue that it has its merits. At the very least, it’s not boring.

Handles its eerie Lovecraftian subject matter better than most films that are straight adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s own stories.

  • AnonymousDecember 28, 2019Reply

    Better than expected.

Just like this review, my heart wasn’t really in it. There was a lot of action and a lot going on, however, it was hard to put much meaning to it because a lot of fundamental motivations were never really explored or explained. Weird sex stuff.

A man arrives to a remote island with the task of being a weather observer when creatures who live on the shores of the island come out at night with deadly intentions.
Went into this not hearing anything about it and was pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere captured, the acting and how beautiful it is shot. Great creepy lighthouse movie.

I was not sure what to expect from this movie, so went in blind with a ‘Hail Mary’ approach. Pleasantly surprising nautical-themed (if lighthouses count as nautical) horror based on a book. Well worth watching if you are into horror / action, looks good, CGI not bad and solid performances by the cast.
