It gets half a star for the radical 90’s techno soundtrack, and half a star for being unintentionally hilarious at times. Other than that it’s remarkable how incompetent every aspect of this movie this.

The GOOD: Fight scenes weren’t terrible. For a video game movie, I thought the costuming was pretty good. Sonya Blade added some Tomb Raider style visuals, if you go for that sort of thing. The BAD: Acting, plot, dialog. Sometimes bad acting in the right context is good. This wasn’t one of those cases. It was just embarrassing. The UGLY: The music was horrendous. The special effects seemed really bad, even for 1997. The dragon-thingy fight at the end, for example, looked like the original Clash of the Titans.

I loved the first movie because it felt like the videogame. This one just goes away from the videogame as possible and tries to be a pure action movie. Literally, only action, no story, characters and even less consistency than the first movie.

Well, as I said with the original MK movie, I’ve seen worse. It’s still bad, though. An incoherent plot, weak acting and shoehorned-in characters who are given no explanation. My full list of pros is shorter than the trailer. My full list of cons…. It’d be quicker to just watch the movie.

  • JAGT PJuly 18, 2013Reply

  • Stefan GOctober 12, 2014Reply

The last Mortal Kombat film was cheesy, but at least that movie was watchable. For the sequel, it seems as though they cut corners wherever they could. The story makes absolutely no logical sense, and feels as though it was written by a bunch of kids. The explanation they give for the plot wouldn’t be so bad if it was given better context, as opposed to the sloppy sequel writing that is clearly demonstrated here. The acting is terrible, but in this movie, most of it is because they hired terrible actors, and these were worse than the actors in the previous movie. The special effects were simply abominable, and some of them look blatantly unfinished and lazily implemented. The overall production values are extremely low, which is completely bizarre when you consider that this movie had a bigger budget than its predecessor. The whole film felt completely mindless, right down to the incompetent and impotent fight scenes, which look like they were choreographed by a bunch of drunken barflies. I can tell beyond any shred of doubt that this was one of the worst movies ever made, and I guarantee that if you watch it, it’ll make you feel really guilty about watching it, because if you watched it, you’ve just wasted your time.

  • Vadim DOctober 29, 2014Reply

It’s so bad, that it’s actually kind of fun to watch. It’s surprising how bad special effects can really be. I don’t think I’ve seen anything since the sci-fi movies of the 50s. But like I said, it’s trashy fun.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation may be the worst movie of all time! The original Mortal Kombat movie was bad. It was hammy, the fight scenes were god awful, the special effects were poor even for 1995, but it was atleast good enough to watch for a laugh, and at least some of the characters seem true to the video-game. However Annihilation is a confused wreck of a movie; terrible acting, terrible scripting, a confusing plot. The movie should never have been released.

It’s not like the first Mortal Kombat raised the bar for action flicks, but between its shallow characters, insipid action sequences and whatever the hell it is exactly that’s being passed off as special effects, the celluloid turd that is Mortal Kombat: Annihilation makes its predecessor look like Raiders of the Lost Ark. Yes, you heard it here. The man behind not one, not two, not three or four, but five shitty Resident Evil movies and Alien vs. Predator made the better film. To actually allow a feat like that to occur means taking shoddy filmmaking to such unthinkable depths of woe, and it should come as no surprise to anyone that a film whose best asset is stunt work that looks like a low-rent acrobatic act you’d expect to see set up shop on a Kmart parking lot reaches those depths like it’s walk in the park.

    Never give up hope.

A group of warriors led by an intergalactic warlord has threatened to invade Earth due to the outcome of the Mortal Kombat tournament. A group of Mortal Kombat warriors from Earth have six days to find the leaders and their minions in hopes of stopping the invasion. Can they really stop the madness?

“If those bars could keep me away from you I’d welcome them.”

John R. Leonetti, director of Butter Fly Effect 2, Annabelle, and episodes of television series Sleepy Hollow, Sons of Thunder, and Providence, delivers Mortal Kombat Annihilation. This storyline, special effects, and action scenes are all terrible. The acting is miserable and the cast includes Robin Shou, Talisa Soto, James Remar, Brian Thompson, Irina Pantaeva, and Chris Conrad.

    “Your failure is my opportunity.”

I came across this on HBOGO and felt that it would be fun to view again; then I discovered, I had never actually seen this before. Everything about this is dreadful. There is no aspect of this film I would recommend. I would recommend skipping this.

Well, they annihilated the MK movie franchise. They deserve a little credit for the prophetic title.

  • Tiana JApril 5, 2015Reply

After watching the first Mortal Kombat movie, there is a sequel that no one asked for. But we got it anyway. And it is no directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

Lui Kang (Robin Shou) and the crew (except Johnny Cage because he died in the first few minutes) has get to victory before Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson), the evil Emperor of the Outerworld, who has a new plan to overtake planet Earth. He has also discovered a portal between Earth and Outerworld. If it stays open for seven days (which I do not understand why), the two worlds will merge, and Shao-Kahn taking control both planets. Rayden (not played by Christopher Lambert) and Sonya (Sandra Hess) set to find his colleague Jax (Lynn Red Williams) while Liu Kang and Kitana (Talisa Soto) are on the trail of Nightwolf/ Litefoot as they race against time to defeat Shao-Kahn, who has brought Queen Sindel (Musetta Vander), who is Katana’s mother, back from the dead to aid his evil scheme.

The sequel to Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is an unnecessary sequel in every way. If you did not see the first film, you will not know what is going on because I did not. You will wonder who these people are, where they are going, what is their motivation, and most of all what the hell is going on. There are twists and turns during the movie (for example Rayden mentions that Shao-Kahn is his brother) but I either did not care, I really saw it coming, or both.

The acting for the most part is pretty bad. I think it is because they got a new cast. While the cast for the first movie was not perfect, but atleast have better acting than the new cast in Moral Kombat: Annihilation. I will say: the new cast try to give good to decent performances but they unfortunately they have to do what the script and the direction tell them to do (which are both equally bad).

The special effects in this movie are really horrendous. They look a Saturday morning cartoon special. In fact, they are the some of the worst special effects I have ever watched. If the special effects are this bad, then this movie should went straight to video.

Lastly, the only people see a movie like Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is to see some fights. They are decent to downright bad. After watching the fight scenes, they get repetitive and old real fast.

At the end, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a joke. It is incredibly bad in every way. The fight scenes might be decent to bad but that does not save the movie from been a failure or the fact that they are repetivite, consists of characters dodging each other by kicking over and over again or doing somersaults over and over again. This is a guilty pleasure because you can watch how bad the acting is, how laughable the dialogue is, and how horrendous the effects are.
If can see it, especially if you not a fan of bad movies, then you might need to avoid this movie and see the first one, which is so much better than this.

  • Alex AApril 10, 2015Reply

Whereas it’s predecessor is mindless popcorn fun, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation hits rock bottom. The dialogue is even cornier this time around, the story is unengaging and annoyingly self-important, the clothing design quality is at Walgreens Halloween-costume level, the characters are lame and not to mention those horrendous special effects straight out of a SyFy network movie. With that said, plus its soundtrack consisting of bland, jarring techno music, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a spit in the face to both fans of the games and cinema in general.

Now i’m a fan of chezzy movies. I love toho movie, i like some direct to video stuff. heck i loved Dude where’s my car. But when you take a great game like mortal kombat (even though it is mindless violence, buts that’s what makes it so cool) and make a hard blown, fatal attempt, crashed before if even took off POS like MKA, well, theres only so much one can stand. I remember going to the theaters when this came out, when i was younger and craved the mindless action and violence of mortal kombat, and loving the first one, only to sit in a dark room for an hour and a half, watching this debacal before me in a sold out crowd (half who were on the train of thought as me as thinking that this SUCKS!) I was ashamed that i paid to see this. This was the first movie i ever thought truly sucked. Even in my younger age, when i would watch anything and like it, i walked out of that theater that day, with just a little less respect for mortal Kombat, and a very disappointed kid. ~~~~~~(MAJOR SPOILERZ!!!!)~~~~~~

Let us just start with saying that all the reviews of this movie were wrong, and that we honest to God believe that this is an amazing movie. Let us tell you why!
    1) Every character was lovable.
Jax: As the token black guy, he filled his role just like his witty and urban banter filled my heart. At first when we saw that Johnny Cage died and was replaced by Jax we were sorely upset, but after he opened his mouth and spit his first hilarious line we were hooked for sure! Also let us just say that he is HUGE! Ladies will love this movie!
Liu Kang: Immediately we were struck by his hair. We had seen it before in the first movie (also a must watch), and we are proud to say that not a single hair has been displaced. It looked just as luxurious, if not more so. Liu Kang struggles throughout the movie with low self-esteem, and the three dimensional nature of his character really strengthens the movie as a whole.
Sonya: Wow, nipples. Shes back and even hotter than before, and now with a new love interest in Jax. This classy Hollywood hottie is now paired up with a black dude, and is fighting social norms while kickin’ ass. Cool.
Shiva: Double the arms, double the fun. We both have had a crush on her since the we moment saw her, and we agree she is without a doubt the most beautiful woman either of us have ever seen. We wish we had a girl like Shiva to do some “Mortal Kombat” with, if you know what we mean.
We could honestly go on, this movie was filled with amazing, sorry, let us reiterate, AMAZING characters which we could write about until “Annihilation”. We wish that they were a part of our great big family.
    2) The Kombat was amazing.
First off, the flips. They rule! The characters basically flip everywhere. You might think it would get old, or just look stupid but we are glad to report that it doesn’t. The choreographers and the stunt doubles really did a bang-up job. Just when you thought the flips would stop, or that it wasn’t appropriate in the scene, they pulled a fast one on you and stuck one in there. It fit every time and felt great. We honestly believe they could squeeze a flip into a sex scene if they weren’t stuck to a PG13 rating. Besides the flips, the fight choreography was a visual banquet and fight choreographers Robin Shou and Pat E. Johnson deserve more recognition for their masterful accomplishment. The kicks, punches, leg sweeps, and cartwheels are top knotch. Sonya has a magnificent high kick, smacking perpetrators for miles around with her beautifully meaty legs. The special wizard powers of characters like sub-zero and nightwolf (that vision quest was groovy) added a whole new dimension that conventional martial arts movies just can’t match.
    3) Special effects
The special digital effects (both 3-D and 2-D) were mind-expanding at the time of the movies release, and believe it or not they still hold up powerfully today. We’re at a loss for words trying to describe the climactic dragon fight between Liu Kang and Shao Khan. It’s truly something that has to be seen to be understood. The digital effects team hits hard, fast, and often with a rambunctious energy in their craft and love in their hearts, leaving us and my companions stunned and speechless for indefinite hours.
    4) The plot
We cried when Johnny Cage died. The bond between Johnny and Sonya was so deep that during that scene we almost felt like we lost our own lover. We were brought to tears. Other scenes had the perfect mix of poignancy and sexy. Many times we were left both misty-eyed and half-chubbed, a perfect mixture.
In short, this movie has changed our lives for the better. We live our lives like Sonya, and make sure we make connections with our loved ones because we know they could be ripped away at a moments notice. The wise words of Raiden echo in our brains, helping us overcome any challenge or trial that life can toss our way. We used to get caught up, but now we can front flip through the fires of hell without the slightest of harm befalling us.

We thoroughly believe everybody should see this at least twice in their lifetime; it’s just that good.

Over and out, Carney and Matt

How to make a sequel to a bad film? Well, make it worse. While the first Mortal Kombat is entertaining and to some (including me) a guilty pleasure, it’s not a good film. But this film takes “shitty” to a whole new level. The acting is horrendous, the story sounds like it was written by a five-year old, … It actually hurt my eyes by how bad this thing even looked. Let’s just put a bag over it’s head, throw it in the basement and forget it ever existed.

If the lines, choppy editing, terrible acting fit for a ‘MST3K’ commentary and bad CGI effects make you want to roll your eyes and toss this movie in the trash, you’re not alone. I give this movie a thumbs up for trying to compare to the game and the first ‘Mortal Kombat’ which was actually praise-worthy for its effects, characters and martial-arts. But ‘Annihilation’ is a pass. Also the violence is unbearably sanitized making me wonder what an R-rated ‘Mortal Kombat’ would have been like.

  • Jamey DMay 3, 2016Reply

Well, time to choose your fighter, because my brutal review of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation starts now…

So the first thing one would notice when this movie starts is the CGI. Yes, you can see where they imposed CGI and where a character is moving against a blue screen. The “special effects” are F-grade, the kind you find in a hapless hacker’s basement.

The second thing you’ll notice right away are the character designs. Never mind the latex on Sheeva, what made me laugh was Motaro’s design. Wow, I didn’t think that Tenacious D’s devil from The Pick of Destiny would be more threatening than that. The dialogue is corny and idiotically spoken right out of the gates, and I know it’s going to get worse.

So obviously, one of the things they try to do is make this more serious by having Johnny Cage become a classic red-shirt and get his neck snapped only 6 minutes into the film. That might be beneficial to preserving his character by having Cage cut from the cast list right away. I wouldn’t be surprised if he refused to show up for the premiere of the film at the local AMC or even see it in theaters.

I should mention that Shao Kahn in this film looks like someone I would hang out with at the gym. The game’s Shao Kahn is a mix of Tarkatan face and human; this one is not. That’s not the image you want to give me. I thought that scene was a decent TV level conversation, but it could have been a bit better.

And of course, the final fight with the infamous CGI. It doesn’t last long, but the CGI returns at the end of the fight.

So what can I say about this that hasn’t already been said before? I know this film has already been dealt with by so many people, but I wanted to do my own look at it. Here’s how I sum it up.

The dialogue is not particularly memorable, there are a lot of weird yells and grunts that did not endear me to the Kombatants not named Jax, and the CGI is awful. The only Mortal Kombat game I’ve ever played is the Sega Genesis version of the original, and I can say with full confidence that that game looks a hell of a lot better than this movie.

MKA is just a dumb-ass attempt to be a fantasy martial arts film, and surprisingly a step down from the original film. Next time, talk to Jackie Chan, Michael Dimartino or Bryan Konieztko regarding that idea, not the dummies who made this.

  • Dan MMay 13, 2016Reply

I vaguely remember the original MK back in the 90’s, but what I don’t remember is it being this incredibly corny with such horrible effects. This looked more like a cheap college production, and why make a Mortal Kombat movie if it’s not going to have any blood or gore? I mean seriously.. this is a movie well worthy of MST3K treatment, I couldn’t stomach this the whole way through. Tap out.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a mindless, non-funny, poorly written sequel to the entertaining first MK movie. It fails on almost every level and will leave you with nothing put disapppointment.

  • Eugene BJune 21, 2016Reply

Clearly a catastrophe as a sequel and overall film. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is forgettable, inconsistent and filled with mediocrity that’s insulting to the famed-fighting-game that it’s inspired by. 2/5

  • Silvestre SJune 21, 2016Reply

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is a horrible mess of plot, chessy effects, too many meaningless jumps, laughable script, cringe filled acting.Mortal Kombat Annihilation fails to relate and live up to the classic game and to entertain its critics and audiences

  • DibbHansen DJuly 7, 2016Reply

The action is great, but wow- I’m amazed that the script was passed off and that the visuals were and are as bad as they are…

  • Scott PDecember 13, 2016Reply

Even though it’s a horrible movie with a stupid plot, some of the laziest and worst action scenes, and zero likeable characters outside of maybe Sindel… its actually halfway decent for a Mortal Kombat story mode.

  • Nexus FMarch 7, 2017Reply

Watch for a good laugh at the awful special effects and acting.

Dude. This movie sucked. It wasn’t as better as the first film.

  • Gabriel EJuly 6, 2017Reply

Wow, what a terrible movie. The good intentions of the first Mortal Kombat are flushed within the first 5 minutes of this sequel as most of the returning characters have been recast, but that’s only the beginning of how atrocious this “film” is. Horrible writing, bad acting, non-existent character development, and shockingly cheap visuals complete with the worst CGI in a big budget movie make this one of the worst films I had the displeasure of enduring.

  • Corey CJuly 25, 2017Reply

Not the best but definitely doesn’t deserve all that bad talk it gets. Still action packed and very entertaining.

Simply. Awful. it was terrible. Awful acting, stupid storytelling and sometimes this movie is just downright LAUGHABLE. Watch this movie for comedy purposes only. I’m dead serious.

  • Jacob BJune 25, 2018Reply

The first Mortal Kombat wasn’t exactly Citizen Kane but Annihilation definitely holds the record of being the worst video game movie that wasn’t directed by Uwe Boll. AND FOR GOOD REASON!!! The movie is hard to take seriously because of the over-the-top fight scenes, even by Mortal Kombat’s standards, the bad performances with monotonous line delivery. Also, hey, how come Sonya, Johnny Cage and Raiden’s actors get to escape from this crap and get different actors but Liu Kang and Kitana’s stay? The biggest narm however is the bad greenscreen effects and CGI. The first movie had these shortcomings too but at least, only one character got the PS1 treatment and we got a really good animatronic out of it. Here, we have CGI that came out of a bad PS1 game. Seriously, what was wrong with New Line back in 1997? I say that because this movie came out the same year as Spawn, which also had glaringly bad CGI, even for the late ’90s. MK: Annihilation is a bad movie that has no redeeming qualities beyond being snark bait due to its poor production values.

    -“You’re alive”
    -“Too bad, you’ll die”
Easily one of the best piece of dialogue in cinema history. And not only that, the film also delivers stunning battle sequences as well as full-bodied characters with a surprising amount of narrative heft to match.

  • Tyler SApril 28, 2019Reply

WOW! Talk about making your weak predecessor look like Citizen Kane. There is so much wrong with this picture. We have no plot. We have horrible action. Some of the worst dialogue, acting, and characters imaginable. But most of all, the hands down WORST special effects in the history of cinema. I’d rather watch a turtle run a marathon than have to see this cinematic torture ever again. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Overall rating: 0.

Here i thought the forst mortal kombat was cheesey and bad but at least it was somewhat entertaining. Mortal kombat annihilation is pure hot garbage from start to finish from bad recasting to horrible low budget special effects. The actors literally seem like they are reading Q cards. At least the first one was enjoyable!

  • Seth MJune 28, 2019Reply

Oh boy, you can watch this movie if you are about ten years old and probably will like it. But if you are anywhere over that you will probably laugh at it. So bombastic it’s almost uncanny. Good for a laugh riot. Where to begin with this thing, I know, avoid it at all costs. Don’t waste your life.

  • Jesse LJuly 20, 2019Reply

This has gotta be one of the ABSOLUTE WORST VIDEO GAME based movies in all of existence, and the first one from 95 was so good it was not great but in comparison to this one it’s a masterpiece. I will admit that it has some things I do like but it’s very far and in between.

  • Jason NJuly 26, 2019Reply

I’ve seen a lot of B-movies that look way better than this.

  • Juan HOctober 11, 2019Reply

While the first Mortal Kombat film was a guilty pleasure of 90s cheesiness, great visual effects, and a decent video game adaptation the same cannot be said for the sequel Mortal Kombat Annihilation. For starters, Lui Kang’s and Kitana’s actors are the only ones to reprise their roles from the previous film but besides that the films suffers from a poor plot, terrible cgi and green screen effects (such as the infamous explosion scene and the animalities), characters that show up only to disappear one scene later ( for example Nightwolf, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion. The former being the brother of the original Sub-Zero from the first film and the latter having survived being killed by Johnny Cage for some unexplained reason.), and Shao Kahn being a laughably bad villain by killing his minions for minor infractions. Ed Boon has said that this is the worst thing to have the Mortal Kombat name on it and we don’t blame him.

  • Max WDecember 2, 2019Reply

You could watch it just to laugh & make fun of it. However, if you try not to: you will anyway

  • T.J. LDecember 20, 2019Reply

I have seen adult films with better acting, writing and effects than this horrible, agonizing piece of crap. This film should only be watched in the presence of a suicide hotline counselor and even then you would be putting yourself…and the counselor at a great risk. Avoid!!!

  • Nolan PDecember 29, 2019Reply

Another complete bomb of a movie to totally avoid, (IF I haven’t let you know already), is this one: Mortal Kombat 2! The absolute worst in all…acting, story, fight scenes and special effects…EVER!
Movie came out just two years after the first MK edition which was quite decent and fun and had a pretty solid cast. That was 1995 and had much more solid special affects than MK2 in 1997! Avoid this one at all costs!…Zero of 10 stars! For oh so many reasons and the stupidest plot too…EVER!

Really wanted this sequel to work. Still to this day it is hard to get through. The first wasn’t great but a least it was watchable.

  • Jonathan MMay 25, 2020Reply

The original Star Wars movie had a budget of 11 million just an example this had a budget of 30 million where did it go they clearly didn’t spend it on sets costume or script writers or actors. Or cynthia rothrock but oh well they dknt seem to like her. One of the best female kung fu actresses of all time who could pass as Sonya blades double and they said they didn’t want her….. I mentioned that because there’s nothing else to talk about this movie is the pits video game to movies don’t work unless you’re very good at directing and very good at writing. Most movie video games are just dumb. This was no exception this was the worst this is as bad as Robocop what’s would be really is combining the two and I just realise they did did I rest my case.

  • Davi AJune 17, 2020Reply

If I could give this movie 0 stars I would, it has the worst CGI of all time. Horrible movie

  • Steve DJuly 7, 2020Reply

Getting rid of Johnny Cage was a brain dead decision and it was all down hill from there.

  • Andrea DJuly 31, 2020Reply

There are really few things to say. You just need to take all of the major problems of the prequel (Recitation, Dierctoring and Visual effects), then multiply it by 1000 and you’ll get this movie.

  • Alberto MAugust 17, 2020Reply

Can we call this a cult classic?
Does it has very bad visuals, terrible acting and cheesy dialogues? Yes, but at the same time it feels very true to the core of MK, the action editing is great you can always tell what is happening. The music goes along perfect with the action. Finally the reason why this is a winner is because the movie from the beginning knows what it is and respects its tone, it never wants to be Citizen Kane or Casablanca.

    Sindel looks like Aubrey Plaza

    Robot ninjas!!!

  • Ruben RAugust 18, 2020Reply

I watched it drunk. and being drunk only made me angrier at how stupid it was.

  • Bradley DJanuary 5, 2021Reply

Awesome sequel to the original, better in my opinion. Storytelling and acting are much better along with the special effects. Definitely a must watch for any MK fan!
