Neeson makes this movie his own with the first of the ‘Liam action movies’ which have transformed cheesy cinema from 2008-15. With a memorable plot, brilliant action and surprisingly decent dialogue, Taken is everything you want (and expect, for the better or worse) from something of its calibre.
    Verdict: A

Are you f_cking kidding me critics, 58%? Really?? Who’s crystal meth have you been smoking on? Anywho, folks, listen. Taken is one of the best action movies put out since The Fugitive! Yes, it’s that good. How good? Layers upon layers with a terrific plot that will keep you guessing on the edge of your seats up to the very end! Go see it!

Despite the irony of seeing a serious anti-gun liberal playing so many characters that are fun-toters, Neeson is great in this pure action romp.

  • wedstarfish 8August 1, 2016Reply

Being a fun action thriller about a dad who has to save his daughter from being kidnapped, this film really works out as a simple action film that is very enjoyable. The plot line for the film is rather understandable, the acting for the film is rather decent, the way the film is directed is fantastic, and the action sequences are brainless fun. Considered at least by me as one of the “best” action films out there, Taken is a well directed and thought out action film.

  • Kelly KAugust 7, 2016Reply

This was a very good film, although not as amazing as everyone lets on. I was expecting much more in terms of dangerous feats and genius tactics from Neeson’s character. It was a bit disappointing.

  • Andruw FSeptember 12, 2016Reply

Went by too fast, no emotional heft to move the story along or make you care, and feels like there are no stakes at hand. There’s also no score behind the action, which makes it not as good. But Liam Neeson is fine. With THE monologue at the beginning to start the story, it’s gonna be hard to have the rest of the movie live up to it. But I do think it’s better than the next two!

  • Thomas TSeptember 17, 2016Reply

  • Choen LOctober 19, 2016Reply

I am not sure if the glaring plotholes are result of bad editing or just bad script writing, but it does make for one entertaining romp after relatively slow burning 25 minute opening introduction. And oh everyone speaks English.

The directing is the worst part. Back when chaos cam was still in vogue. It ruins nearly all of what would have been otherwise fantastic action sequences. It’s a fun action movie, all things considered.

  • Filippo VDecember 22, 2016Reply

It may be a bit too violent for a PG-13 movie but Liam Neeson demonstrates just how badass he is in Taken with tons of fun action sequences and a couple of heart-pounding thrills making it an action movie that remains entertaining in its own right. True, it has some plotholes like the two girls early on in the movie telling a complete stranger their personal details…because they totally won’t suffer possible consequences at all… but this movie, upon being seen, won’t be remembered for that. Instead, it will be remembered for main protagonist Bryan Mills’ iconic phone speech.

Taken is undeniably a straight up action-packed popcorn flick. However, it does have a rather very unique, fast-paced and slick action. This film elevates Liam Neeson as an action star with “A particular set of skills”. Nothing more to say, an exciting largely brainless well filmed action film that will definitely entertain you for 90 minutes.

  • dj lMay 3, 2017Reply

taken is a fun and amazing film with action packed action scenes

  • Ben LMay 15, 2017Reply

I’ve actually seen Taken 2, but I never watched the original film that kicked off this entire trend of movies about “old” men coming out of retirement to kill a bunch of people again. I can see why this movie was such a hit, because it seems to have all the required elements of a crowd-pleasing action film. The setup makes you sympathize with the protagonist, and then have zero sympathy for the antagonists. It is loaded with intense and visceral scenes of violence that we can justify, because we are programmed to think it’s acceptable for a man to stop at nothing in order to save his daughter. I’ll admit that the way the story is framed also got its hooks into me so that I cared about the good guys and wanted to see them take down the bad guys in any way possible.

Liam Neeson is superb at the most important part of this role…sounding dangerous. The famous phone call that kicks off the action of the film is so well done, and it relies completely on Neeson delivering the lines in just the right way. A lot of the action sequences are shot in creative ways so that he can pull it off or they can hide the fact that we’re actually seeing a stunt double, so I didn’t have any issues with that stuff. The only time I cringed a little about Neeson’s acting was in the opening few scenes before and during his daughter’s party, but I think that was more a symptom of some bad script work. The rest of the cast was fine, but sadly, there wasn’t one villain established well enough to stand out from the rest or to feel like the main antagonist that needed to be defeated.

What surprised me the most was the level of violence in Taken. Based on the way people have sold this movie to me in the past, I expected it to be almost traumatic levels of gore and violence. Yet I didn’t get that, instead this movie seemed almost restrained compared to what I’ve seen in other films. It’s not really a bad thing, but I think I expected a little more shock and awe when he was dispatching a room full of bad guys. Taken is loaded with these scenes where the tension builds up for a few seconds and then it is released very quickly in dramatic fashion. I think it might have worked better if the tension built up a little longer, or if I felt for even one second that he had met his match or might fail. They even had a ticking clock but rarely referenced it.

Taken is kind of dumb in some parts. There are definite logic problems I had with the film, but they are standard across most action movies, so I am accustomed to letting that kind of stuff go. I also liked that they didn’t hide anything or attempt to surprise the audience with the plot of the film. They have scenes very early where the main character and his friends talk about what they used to do, so it never feels like the writers are wasting our time trying to trick us into believing he is just an average guy. And this makes it so we don’t have to be introduced to each new character he meets because we can just accept that these are connections he made in his old life. I’m willing to take some of the common action movie nonsense in Taken, because it is just a fun ride, and I would gladly watch it again any time.

  • Brandon SMay 22, 2017Reply

Although not exactly ingenious, it was fun and is likeable, perhaps even worth more than one watch. The music was good enough and the acting passable, though Famke Janssen is starting to show her age (I swear she looked twenty years younger in the first two X-men movies). But whatever. She’s still a good actor. And Liam Neeson is also as good as can be expected.

  • Nick RJune 20, 2017Reply

Certainly cliche, ‘Taken’ is an entertaining flick that doesn’t require much effort on the part of the audience.

  • Mark LJuly 22, 2017Reply

Taken never manages to lose a distracting cheesy aspect, but the overall weight of the plot, unique approach to action scenes and of course, Liam Neeson’s cold and calculating protagonist create a tense experience.

Movie about a father who hunts down kidnappers of his daughter when she takes a trip to Europe. Rips off many movies done before, but I like it simply for Liam Neeson. Plus the plot of the movie is actually much better than most of the movies its ripped off.

  • Ray SJuly 30, 2017Reply

Don’t understand the critics problem at all. This is by definition a classic. One of the best Neeson movies out there. Since it came out I’ve seen this movie over 50 times and it hasn’t gotten old due to its iconic lines and overall story.

  • Dan LJanuary 19, 2018Reply

I do not understand what’s so good about Taken. Yes, some of the action scenes were fun and Liam Neeson is a badass, but it doesn’t really have much of a plot, or even characters for that matter. The only characters in the movie are Bryan Mills, his daughter, and several characters to move the plot forward. Not even a villain, just a bunch of random Albanian expendables. His daughter is supposed to be 17, but the actress looks like she’s in her early-mid twenties. Minor complaint! Major complaint, it’s derivative and even a little bit silly.

Bryan Mills has a CIA contact when it’s convenient for the script, like a character to tell Bryan who kidnapped his daughter, and another character in France (Jean-Claude) to tell him about a local prostitution ring. He even gives him a card which he uses later on to impersonate as Jean-Claude and even sets up Jean-Claude as an antagonist. He also has 96 hours to save his daughter, but that deadline becomes irrelevant after 56 hours. Why bother with a 96 hour deadline in the first place? And why 96 hours?

I don’t expect every action movie to have a plot, but if it’s not going to have a plot, it has to at least have kickass action scenes with impressive stunts and choreography, the kind that you see in many martial art films. Taken doesn’t really have that. The editing clearly tried to work around Neeson’s limitations as an action star. The only action scene I really enjoyed was the very last fight scene.

Taken achieves what it sets out to do for sure. It’s a straightforward, undemanding action movie and it doesn’t try to be anything more. But even as a straightforward action movie, it’s still pretty unremarkable. Is there a reason to watch Taken again over many better action movies? Because I can’t really find that many.

Geez. A seriously under-rated movie. I absolutely loved this movie! It’s a great action flick. The idea is pretty original, and Pierre Morel goes into unexplored territory, trying out new things that actually worked well for this movie. This film has this realistic, dark and gritty feel to it that I thought added a lot of depth. It’s just great fun, and it’s an endless array of fist-fights, chases, shoot-outs, torture, interrogations and escapes. It was pure kinetic thrills. Best Liam Neeson performance I have seen, in my opinion. I think this movie was not liked because of it’s simple plot, and, yes, there aren’t any twists or revealing secrets. But this movie concentrated more on action and Liam Neeson killing everybody. If you go in it with that mindset, I’m sure you’ll like it.
Action junkies will be thrilled. Liam Neeson fans will be amazed. An ordinary person will be entertained. CHECK IT OUT.

  • Gimly MMarch 16, 2019Reply

Probably not good enough to have started the Revenge-Renaissance that it somehow did, but still a pretty entertaining time. Taken does hit a lot of clichà (C)s though, and I mean, it starts hitting them right away. We’re literally only minutes into the film before we find out that Neeson’s lead character is divorced, and his wife has re-married to a decent, rich provider, but one who’s bookish and could never take him in a fight, and that the present he got for his daughter is for an interest that she no longer has. But once we get into the action proper, it’s pretty great.

It shines at times but is also very boring too. The action in the final act is worth the wait but is still a dull movie overall. Neeson is great by the way.

  • Matthew DJune 15, 2019Reply

    A riveting action thriller.

Pierre Morel’s action, mystery movie Taken (2009) is a fantastic time! Taken takes killer choreography with brutal hand to hand combat and pits it against hard-nosed detective mystery noir. Morel’s direction is solid with some dated editing choices, but Taken is fast paced and easy to follow.

The action fights are as cool as Liam Neeson threatening people across Paris. It’s a simple movie with a basic and cliche premise, but it works. Once Neeson’s Bryan has a goal of finding his daughter Kim, we get to witness his specialized skills in action, tracking down girl traffickers and locating his missing daughter. The constant killing is always entertaining to watch Neeson execute with extreme prejudice.

Neeson makes for a believable action star with his serious persona, deep gravelly voice, and notable presence. His massive stature brings an intensity to his close quarters combat sequences, while his charming personality make his dialogue endlessly quotable.

Famke Janssen is great as the ignorant rich mother that is out of touch with reality. Though Besson cannot write women to save his life, Janssen keeps her character Lenore strictly in a mean ex-wife mode at all times digging insults into Neeson. Maggie Grace is good as Neeson’s scared, kidnapped daughter Kim. A young Katie Cassidy makes an appearance as the dumb friend Amanda.

Lastly, Leland Orser makes for a neat supporting actor as Bryan’s friend and former coworker for the government named Sam.

Taken is fascinating and dark, but with Luc Besson’s script, all is well. Besson’s jokes are hilarious one liners delivered with Neeson’s suave nonchalance. Besson’s story is straightforward and gritty with biting commentary on police corruption and the danger of travelling abroad.

While, some of the music, editing, and cinematography feels dated. The overall experience of Taken is a thrilling one.

I love this movie, his action was so good and know how to find a way to get his daughter back.

  • Jonathan AOctober 20, 2019Reply

Minimal plot, zero character depth, racial stereotypes and excessive body count made this movie a real dud for me.

This movie was amazing. Liam Neeson did a fantastic job as Bryan Mills. He’s very determined and confident throughout the entire movie. He knows how to get what he wants from people and make them pay so he can get his daughter back. That’s why I loved this movie. Anyone will enjoy this movie. It’s totally worth it.

    Liam, you can do better.

“Taken” is a 2008 film, which was popular (the audience liked it a lot), which is in a nutshell that Liam Neeson who is a former CIA agent, will have to kill half a mob to save his daughter White’s traffic. As the plot sounds and that is Liam Neeson, it is not surprising that it has caught people’s attention.

The visual direction is very good because the movie ends up being very entertaining, this is thanks to the well executed sequences of action, the performances are also very acceptable, but of course those of Neeson and Janssen, are the most outstanding. Another positive aspect of the film is that it can be said that he takes his time in the sense that there is no meaningless action in the first 5 minutes, although the film is not much he dedicates a little time to his characters, and That is very good, you know who is who and why things, you find out why their situation is like this, among other things, I liked it so much that it does not rush things so much, let’s be honest that is worth recognizing from a movie of action.

I think it is interesting the way in which the film briefly shows how white trafficking is, I am not saying that its representation is 100% realistic, but I dare to say that if it is a bit similar to reality, the film It teaches you that the majority of customers of that kind of thing are not lazy in the street, if they are not rich and often famous people. (Maybe that is one of the reasons why the film did not got good well reviews)
Previously I said that the action scenes are well executed, but I did not say that they were very well executed, I mean that it can be said that to some extent the fight sequences are somewhat simple, an example of a very well executed sequence of action would be in “John Wick” the way Keanu Reeves moves is incredible, you know he gave himself to the role, because I train Kung Fu literally, and thanks to that you believe it when he defeats everyone, while with Liam you see him “Fight” and you say “well it’s just a movie”. Speaking of the bad for more positive aspects that it has is not saved from the negative aspects, although the film is well narrated, many things are very convenient, for example, that of the subject that says “Good luck”, that coincidentally he runs into it again by chance and casually says “Good Luck” and despite the fact that people’s voices change a little when they speak on the phone or microphone, Liam’s character “Brian” manages to recognize him because surely the scriptwriters they thought most would say “That´s awesome”.
Instead of surprising you, the scene only ends up being convenient for the plot to progress, but since after that they reward you with an entertaining action scene.

But well the rest is more convenience and Liam proving unrealistically that nobody could against him. In spite of all the good, it weighs on the bad.

In conclusion “Taken” is a very entertaining action movie, which explores in an acceptable way the subject of trafficking in white, with good sequences of action, an acceptable direction, acceptable performances, a good narration, with various plot conveniences, and things unrealistic, but in spite of that I dare to say that it is a classic for modern action cinema, that is why “Taken” manages to get a good 7/10.

The fact that the audience rating is 85% is a real indictment of the stupidity of the general populace. There is nothing thrilling about this movie. The action is just sloppy edited shots with about a thousand cuts and the most ridiculous shakey cam ive seen in a while. Just an overall crapfest

  • Samuel LFebruary 27, 2020Reply

A reasonable plot with decent acting and lots of action. The film isn’t long and gets to the point. My biggest problems with this film are the idiotic 17 year olds and the shaky cam. Luckily the shaky cam isn’t as bad as it is in the Bourne movies. Worth a watch and not a bad action film.

  • Andy FMarch 5, 2020Reply

After a bright start, Taken turns into a brainless beat em up and chase around. Fun to watch but completely daft.

  • March 12, 2020Reply

I never thought Liam Neeson can play very well in action movie but in this movie he can play it in the badass character very well. I love this movie it feel like Man On Fire + The Bourne Identity. It very entertaining movie if you like to see awesome action thriller movie with the sample good plot this one is the answer.

  • Nordic WMarch 18, 2020Reply

A decent action flick that took everyone by surprise at the time, myself included. Liam Neeson’s acting performance and the competently filmed action scenes were very impressive. Sadly though the 2 sequels to this movie SUCK.

  • Anthony FMarch 20, 2020Reply

The original that started them all. So many other movies and TV shows have copied aspects of this movie, that it is a modern legendary film. Still, it does have its drawbacks, mostly from aspects that are left open because they knew squeals were in the future.

  • Jacob20 BMarch 31, 2020Reply

Yes, it’s a little brainless. But man was this a good, fun time at the movies.

  • Cameron AApril 6, 2020Reply

Taken 1 is action packed & very suspenseful which makes this film best in the entire franchise. It also provides the best action as well, something that the sequels clearly really lacked since they used to many cuts & shaky cam which ruined the action further more.

  • Marcus KApril 15, 2020Reply

The setup is incredibly corny (and lengthy), but at least there are some satisfying action moments in the second half. With more complex characters and a more original (or simply subdued) backstory, “Taken” could have been epic. The way it is, it’s half cringey, half good, which somehow leads to an average of “barely okay”.

  • Paul GMay 27, 2020Reply

I’m no fan of Liam but this is a really great film. The relentless action is spot on, and the urgency to find his daughter in time really brings a lot of tension. Loved it.

  • cork bJune 19, 2020Reply

It is weird that despite Liam Neeson having a career going back to the 80s, in my mind, his career, specifically as an action star, started with ‘Taken’. Sure there were LOTS of other films, even action films, but he generally had a supporting role and was never really front and center, maybe excepting ‘Rob Roy’. Is ‘Taken’ a great film? Eh, maybe not Indiana Jones or anything, but certainly better than Crystal Skull. Taken is almost a cliche now for a frenetic ‘save the girl at all costs’ action flick, and there are probably dozens of copycat films based on this, including 2 sequels.
Basically, Liam’s daughter is captured by human traffickers, and Liam used to kill people for some shady organization, so he is gonna slit some throats! The action is fast, grim and tightly woven in to the storyline – I never felt there was a wasted car chase or anything. Despite guns being literally lying around in this film, Liam prefers to kill people with his hands mostly. A bit morally ambiguous sometimes, the main character keeps you rooting for him with his relentless pursuit of his daughter. The only downside I can think of is Neeson is literally SO badass, you know he can’t fail.

  • Brian SJuly 24, 2020Reply

For those who say that Taken is just a silly and brainless action movie, I would have to disagree on that one. It’s an exercise with a big theme of love and devotion, which I could really feel. And it’s a suprisingly pretty tense film, with some moments that had me really biting my nails. And the action/martial arts scenes are very well done, and also pretty entertaining. The only problem is that I feel that the gore is too restrained in those action sequences. Liam Neeson, who was also in the good survival film The Grey (2011) is very convincing as an anxious and determined, and certainly bad ass father. Overall, I was very entertained with this action, thriller flick, and I would recommend it!!

Rewatching some older movies (like early 2000’s) and liked this one — was not so fond of the sequels but this one holds up well for me. As with most times, I don’t end up on the same side as the critics but am on the same side with most viewers….which is how I would prefer it honestly. Yay!

  • Ross CAugust 16, 2020Reply

Surprisingly good. I was worried this would just be another Ransom, another routine thriller, but it takes a different route to the one expected at first. It’s a detective story, a la Luc Besson, set in Paris with some social commentary thrown in. Nothing sophisticated but it was a fun James Bond style superhero action flick that never felt gratuitous and was reasonably well grounded in reality.

  • Kim DAugust 20, 2020Reply

Watch for the action scenes only. The plot is paper thin and acting mostly subpar.

  • AnonymousAugust 23, 2020Reply

If it’s deep character study you’re looking for, I can tell you this isn’t it. But what it does have is a very particular set of action sequences, sequences that make a nice, satisfying movie.

  • Akshat MAugust 28, 2020Reply

This film was missing kick the crap out of everyone who gets in your way action. Many will say that it was not needed but I think that thing makes this type of movie much better. Liam Neeson’s acting was nice, loved it. But there was a problem with the story, it was too simple. The story needed to be more powerful. Also, the character development was also not done nicely. They should have done the character development seeing that the sequels are gonna come. Overall, you will enjoy the film but it’s not for hard-core action fans.

Great movie and satisfying to watch. The story was good too but it could be pretty cheesy and a little predictable at times. I didn’t mind the short runtime either as there was no extra bs, it was very straight to the point.

  • Shaun DSeptember 14, 2020Reply

As good as it gets really, I wish it went for longer! Thrill a minute & extremely clever in the planning of everything Neeson did

  • Jonathan RSeptember 14, 2020Reply

overall good movie…Neeson plays a great role

  • Mari MSeptember 20, 2020Reply

This is a really good movie. The man is trying to have a relationship with his daughter and is coping with still being in love with his ex-wife who has moved on. He has friends from his past that he still communicates with and they play an intricate role in helping him search for his loved one when someone very close to him is TAKEN. There is a harsh reality that is human trafficking and hopefully this thriller can open the door for how the audience can start talking about the reality of girls being taken and sold like property all over the world. Volunteer with the POLARIS PROJECT if you are passionate about ending human trafficking with No I’m not an official board member or anything important like that but I have been to their talks and volunteer when I can.

And, (gulp) damsels in distress. Oh my. 🙂

  • Michelle OJanuary 8, 2021Reply

The film greatly depicts the perspective of an unfortunate father who misses his remarried, ex-wife, and struggles to remain close to his daughter (Kimmy) due to the divorce. The movie was brilliant in that it shows a biological father who is willing to die for his daughter and uses his abilities as a government operative to save her while the rich stepdad merely provides superficially with lavish presents on Kimmy’s birthday. Liam Neeson was very authentic and believable as a worried dad. Action scenes were very suspenseful, but scenes without violence were more far more suspenseful. For example, the telephone call with his daughter’s captors and the discovery of Kimmy’s travel buddy drugged and raped countless times. Teaches lessons of the importance of fatherhood, the familial harm of divorce, sex-trafficking, and classism. An overall very intense action-revenge film that covers some heavy topics.
